A Technical SEO Checklist for Small Business Websites

The technical basics that decide whether Google can find, render and trust your site: indexing, speed, mobile, structured data and common mistakes.

Great content cannot rank if search engines cannot reach, render or understand your pages. This checklist covers the technical foundations we look at first on any small-business site.

Crawling and indexing

  • Submit an XML sitemap in Google Search Console and reference it in robots.txt.
  • Make sure robots.txt does not block important pages, scripts or styles.
  • Give every page a self-referencing canonical URL, and pick one version of your domain (with or without www, always HTTPS).
  • Return a real 404 status for pages that do not exist. Redirecting every wrong URL to the home page creates “soft 404s”, which Google treats as low-quality.
  • Use 301 redirects when you move or delete a page that had links or traffic.

Rendering

If your site is a single-page app that builds everything in the browser with JavaScript, a crawler first receives an almost empty page. Google can render JavaScript, but it is slower and less reliable, and other search and social crawlers often do not. Prerendering or server-side rendering delivers finished HTML on the first request and is the safer choice for any page you want to rank.

Page experience and speed

Google’s Core Web Vitals measure how a page feels to use. The “good” thresholds are:

  • Largest Contentful Paint (LCP): 2.5 seconds or less.
  • Interaction to Next Paint (INP): 200 milliseconds or less.
  • Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS): 0.1 or less.

The usual wins are compressing and properly sizing images, serving modern formats such as WebP or AVIF, self-hosting fonts, loading only the JavaScript a page needs, and caching static files for a long time.

On-page basics

  • One clear <h1> per page, with headings in a logical order.
  • A unique title and meta description for every page, written for people.
  • Descriptive alt text on meaningful images.
  • Internal links with descriptive anchor text between related pages, so important pages are never orphaned.

Structured data

Add schema.org markup (Organization, LocalBusiness, Service, FAQPage, Article) where it genuinely describes the page, and validate it with Google’s Rich Results Test. Only mark up content that is visible on the page.

Mobile and security

Most searches happen on phones, and Google indexes the mobile version of your site first. Test real pages on a real device, keep tap targets large enough, and serve everything over HTTPS.

Measure

Set up Google Search Console to see which pages are indexed and which queries bring visitors, and add privacy-friendly analytics such as Cloudflare Web Analytics to see what people read. Review both monthly.
