How Much Should a Small Business Spend on Meta Ads?
A practical way to work out a Meta Ads budget from your own numbers: target cost per customer, the learning phase, and when to scale.
There is no universal “right” Meta Ads budget. There is, however, a minimum budget that lets the platform learn, and you can calculate it from your own numbers in a few minutes.
1. Start with what a customer is worth to you
Work out the most you can afford to pay to win one customer (your target cost per acquisition, or CPA). Take your average order or first-project value, subtract your costs, and decide how much of the remaining margin you are willing to spend on advertising. If a new customer brings you £300 of gross profit, a £60 target CPA is a sensible starting point.
2. Give the algorithm enough data to learn
Meta’s delivery system needs a steady stream of the result you ask it to optimise for. Meta’s own guidance is roughly 50 optimisation events per ad set per week to exit the learning phase. That gives a rule of thumb:
- Weekly budget per ad set ≈ target CPA × 50.
- Example: a £20 CPA means about £1,000 a week, or roughly £140 a day, for one ad set.
- If that number is out of reach, optimise for an event higher up the funnel (for example add-to-cart or lead) or run fewer ad sets so the budget is not spread thin.
3. Budget for creative, not just for reach
Most weak accounts do not have a budget problem; they have too few creative ideas being tested. Plan to test several hooks and angles in each cycle, keep the winners and replace the tired ads. Our own packages run on a two-week creative testing cycle for this reason.
4. Scale gradually
When a campaign is working, increase the budget in steps rather than doubling it overnight. Many media buyers raise budgets by around 20% at a time and then wait a few days, because large jumps and heavy edits can send an ad set back into learning.
5. Separate your ad spend from your management fee
Ad spend goes to Meta; management is the fee you pay for the people running the account. When we scope a project, we suggest a starting ad budget of $1,200+ to $2,500+ per month depending on the package, and we confirm it against your own CPA maths in the consultation. For example, our Starter package starts at $349/month for management, with ad spend on top.
A simple checklist before you launch
- Know your target CPA and break-even point.
- Confirm tracking works: Meta pixel, Conversions API and the events you will optimise for.
- Set a budget that can realistically produce ~50 results a week per ad set, or choose a higher-funnel event.
- Prepare at least three distinct creative angles.
- Decide in advance when you will review (we suggest every 2 weeks, not every day).
